First, Racing Hart introduced a new model-specific five-spoke wheel for the Mazdaspeed. We already spoke about the MP3's stellar handling but Mazda engineers wanted to improve handling ability without compromising the ride quality with the Mazdaspeed P. The Mazdaspeed flaunts the handling prowess of the MP3 with an additional 30 ponies to complete the package. The car needed more power to be considered a contender. But with only 140hp, the MP3 was a dog at the drags. For $18,500, the MP3 featured a Racing Beat-tuned suspension, Racing Hart rollers, and 280 watts of Kenwood ICE with an MP3 player. Independent magazine testing found the MP3's slalom speed to rival that of a 911 Turbo. The MP3 was a seriously sick car in the twisties. But the MP3 tossed its suit and specs and blasted out of the phone booth like some sort of bird or plane, or even, dare we say, a supercar. While the Proteg is a great little car in the truest sense of the phrase, it is by no means a pocket rocket. The 2002 MP3 was a limited-edition performance version based on the rather pedestrian Mazda Proteg ES. ![]() And the 2003 Mazdaspeed Proteg learned a valuable lesson from its esteemed predecessor, the Mazda MP3. Generally speaking, a protg is one who is trained under the tutelage of another.
